Planning your trip

When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

Tanzania is wonderful all year. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti, with excellent wildlife viewing. June to October is the dry season — ideal for safaris and the Great Migration river crossings. November and December are the green season, with fewer visitors, lush scenery and excellent birdwatching.

Where is the Great Migration during the year?

Millions of wildebeest and zebras move around the Serengeti ecosystem every year. From January to March they give birth on the short-grass plains of the southern Serengeti; in the dry season, roughly June to October, they reach the north, where the dramatic Mara River crossings take place. Our 7-Day Threads of Migration and 8-Day Great Migration Safari are built around the crossings.

Can you plan a trip just for us?

Yes. We plan every trip in a special way — because every traveller is different. Our itineraries are sample journeys: we can change any day, add nights or combine parks, and we create wildlife, luxury, honeymoon and family safaris. Tell us your dates and wishes and our travel expert will reply within 24 hours.

Can I combine a safari with Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar?

Of course. From wildlife safaris to beach escapes, your perfect trip to Tanzania can include all three: climb Kilimanjaro, see the Big Five on safari and finish on a white-sand beach in Zanzibar. Build your plan in the trip planner or send us a message and we will put it together for you.

Climbing Kilimanjaro

Do I need climbing experience for Kilimanjaro?

No. Kilimanjaro routes do not require technical climbing skills. With a moderate level of fitness and the help of our expert guides you can stand on Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the Roof of Africa. Walking slowly and choosing a longer route gives your body more time to acclimatise.

Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?

Machame (7 days) offers stunning scenery and a good success rate; Lemosho (8 days) adds quieter trails and extra acclimatisation; Marangu (6 days) is the only route with sleeping huts; the Northern Circuit (9 days) is the longest and most remote; Rongai (7 days) is a quieter climb from the north; and Umbwe (6 days) is the shortest and steepest, for experienced hikers. Tell us about your fitness and dates and we will recommend the best one.

What is included in a Kilimanjaro climb?

Park, camping or hut fees, rescue fees, all meals on the mountain, professional mountain guides and porters, tents and camping equipment, transfers to and from the park gates and your certificate of achievement. Not included: flights, hotel nights before or after the climb (we can add them), personal trekking gear, tips for the crew and travel insurance with medical evacuation cover, which we highly recommend.

What happens on summit day?

You wake around midnight and climb slowly in the dark, reaching Uhuru Peak around sunrise. After photos at the top you descend to a lower camp. It is the longest day of the climb — usually 11 to 14 hours of walking — and your guides check on you all the way.

Zanzibar & culture

How long should I stay in Zanzibar?

Our Zanzibar holidays run for 3, 5 or 7 days: a short Stone Town and Nungwi beach escape, a five-day culture-and-beach trip with Prison Island and a spice farm, or a full week with Safari Blue or Mnemba Atoll snorkelling and a sunset dhow cruise.

What is the Culture Tour with the Bus?

A two-day, one-night trip by shared shuttle (maximum 12–15 passengers) from Shoppers in Arusha: a game drive in Tarangire, a night at Twiga Campsite in Mto wa Mbu, a village cycling tour with views of Lake Manyara and a traditional lunch cooked by women from the village. It costs US$150 per person and departure is guaranteed.

Booking, prices & payment

What is included in the safari price?

Park fees for non-residents, all activities and accommodation in the itinerary, a professional driver-guide, all transport, taxes and VAT, your round-trip airport transfer, and meals and drinks as specified. Not included: international flights, extra nights before or after, tips, personal items, travel insurance and visa fees.

How much should I tip?

Tips are not included in the price. As a guideline, plan about US$10 per person per day for your safari driver-guide. On Kilimanjaro, tips for guides, porters and the cook are given at the end of the climb — we will send you a simple guideline with your booking.
